About Markdown Editor Preview
Markdown Editor Preview is a free editor for Markdown, the plain-text format used for README files, notes, documentation and blog posts. You write on the left and see the formatted result on the right as you type.
Your documents stay on your device
There is no account and no server that stores your writing. Documents are saved in your browser's own storage (IndexedDB) on this device. They are never uploaded, so they are not shared between your devices or browsers either.
Because the browser holds your documents, clearing this site's data deletes them. Use Settings → Export backup now and then to keep a copy, and Import backup to restore it on any device.
What it can do
- Live preview with GitHub Flavored Markdown: tables, task lists, strikethrough, footnotes.
- Syntax highlighting for code blocks in many languages.
- Math formulas with KaTeX (
$E = mc^2$) and diagrams with Mermaid. - Several documents, with search, rename, duplicate and an outline of headings.
-
Open
.mdfiles by dragging them in; export as Markdown or a standalone HTML page. - Light and dark themes, synchronized scrolling and keyboard shortcuts.
- Works offline once loaded, and can be installed as an app.
Safe with any Markdown
Markdown may contain HTML. Everything you open is treated as untrusted: scripts, event handlers and dangerous links are removed before anything is shown, and a strict Content Security Policy blocks scripts that could slip through. Images from other sites can be held back until you click them (Settings → Preview), so a document can't tell anyone when you open it.
Open-source software
Markdown Editor Preview is built with React, CodeMirror, unified/remark, KaTeX, Mermaid, Dexie and other open-source projects. Their licenses are listed in the third-party licenses.
